New CD with Branko Arnsek and his jazz band
Swinging feelings of spring
Branko Arnsek, a jazz bassist from Sindelfingen, feels particularly comfortable in two styles: the Cuban and Latin music and the gypsyswing. The latter is published on the recently released CD "#One" with the Guttenberger Brothers from Stuttgart.
On "#One" the Guttenberger Brothers go on a musical journey into the jazz world of the 1930s and 1940s. They also combine the traditional Sinti and Manouche jazz with casual swinging pieces by Charles Trenet, Ed Motta and Harry Warren or build a piece of Roger Cicero. Sologitarrist Mano Guttenberger, his brother Knebo on the rhythm guitar and Branko Arnsek by Stefan Koschitzki on alto saxophone and flute, Frank Eberle on the piano and Christoph Raff on drums.
Twelve pieces are assembled on the Silberling of the formation founded in 2011, five are from the pen of Arnsek. In them the 55-year-old contrabassist shows not only compositional qualities, but also appears as the author of German-language texts. This passion is not new.
Already on the CD "Mari Gidli" recorded with the Zigeli Winter Quintet in 2001, there was already a piece of Arnsek with "Lieder für euch", whose lines are the inspiration for the songs now assembled on the Guttenberger album. This is: "We make songs for you as in ancient times, and we never regret / (...) This is music that is ours, which gives each of us something, a bit of warmth and heart, and sometimes something Pain."
A vocal interpretation, however, is not Arnsek himself, but rhythm guitarist Knebo Guttenberger, who was, at times, also a frontman of the Federal Youth Jazz Orchestra. In the best Crooner style and with a soft and intonation-proof voice, he sings about the feeling of spring, the soup, the house visits, the chips and the beer at the scene of the "crime scene" and other life-threatened sensations. Former classmates of Branko Arnsek at the Pfarrwiesengymnasium may wonder whether they can be meant when the piece is about a best friend. It is criticized by society critically in "I dreamed", in which Arnsek imagines a world free from egoism and xenophobia. "Hart & Herzlich", on the other hand, is one of two instrumentals on the album "#One" and, like the Django Reinhardt original "Artillerie lourde", follows the typical style of the unforgettable French jazz guitarist.
